Mahjong Tile Size Guide: Mini, Classic, Large and Your Racks

Tile size decides more than looks. It changes how easily four people can read the tiles across a table, how the set feels in your hand, and whether the racks you already own will hold a full wall. This guide gives the measurements that matter, our own sizes, and a simple way to check any set against your racks before you buy.

What size are mahjong tiles?

Short answer: A typical American mahjong tile is about 30 mm tall, 21 to 22 mm wide and 13 to 14 mm thick, roughly 1.18 x 0.87 x 0.55 in. Sizes vary by maker, from compact tiles near 24 mm tall to large tiles of 36 mm and more. For rack fit, the number to check is the width, because each wall is 19 tiles long.

How tile size is measured

Every tile has three measurements:

  • Height: the long side of the face, top to bottom. Many sellers, us included, name a size by its height, so a 30 mm tile is 30 mm tall.
  • Width: the short side of the face. It sets how long your wall and your hand will be.
  • Thickness: front to back. It decides how a tile sits in the groove of a rack.

Always compare all three. Two sets sold as the same size can differ by a millimeter or two in width or thickness, and on a wall of 19 tiles that adds up. To measure a set you already own, lay one tile face up on a ruler for height and width, then stand it on its side for thickness.

Our tile sizes

Every melamine design comes in three sizes, with the same art and the same 7 back colors in each:

  • 24 mm Mini: 0.94 x 0.63 x 0.43 in (24 x 16 x 11 mm)
  • 30 mm Classic: 1.18 x 0.87 x 0.55 in (30 x 22 x 14 mm)
  • 36 mm Large: 1.42 x 1.10 x 0.71 in (36 x 28 x 18 mm), with fine vertical lines on the colored back

Our Pearl acrylic sets come in one size: 1.38 x 0.98 x 0.43 in (35 x 25 x 11 mm). They are nearly as tall as Large but slimmer than Classic.

How they compare with a typical American tile

  • Classic matches the typical American tile almost exactly. It is the safe choice when you do not know the racks.
  • Mini is clearly smaller than typical. It packs into a weekend bag and fits a small table, so it suits travel and players who sit close.
  • Large is bigger in every direction, which makes the faces easier to read. It needs longer racks, which the next section covers.
  • Pearl sits between Classic and Large in height, with a slimmer profile than either.

Large mahjong tiles

Our large mahjong tiles are the 36 mm Large: 1.42 x 1.10 x 0.71 in (36 x 28 x 18 mm). The 30 mm Classic is 1.18 x 0.87 x 0.55 in (30 x 22 x 14 mm). The larger faces are easier to read.

Large tiles need longer racks. A wall of 19 is about 20.9 in, longer than our acrylic and rattan look racks of about 20 in, so use racks at least about 21 in long.

Every melamine design comes in Large. Holiday Plaid and Christmas Nutcracker have big numbers on the Craks, and Garden colors its corner numbers by suit.

Will the tiles fit your racks?

A rack does three jobs. Your hand stands in a groove facing you, exposed groups sit on top, and the pusher moves your wall toward the center. Tile size affects all three, and the wall is the one that catches people out.

Check 1: the wall

Each wall is 19 tiles long and two high, and the pusher should reach along all of it. Multiply the tile width by 19 to get the length of the wall:

  • Mini: about 12 in
  • Classic: about 16.5 in
  • Pearl: about 18.6 in
  • Large: about 20.9 in

Racks commonly run about 18 to 20 in long. Rack guides from mahjong shops treat about 18.5 in as the usual length for standard tiles and call for 19 to 20 in or more for large tiles. One complete set from a large mahjong retailer, for example, pairs 0.9 in wide tiles, a wall of about 17.1 in, with 18.2 in racks.

Our own racks are about 20 in long. That leaves room for a wall of 19 stacks of Mini or Classic tiles, while a wall of 36 mm Large tiles runs longer than the rack. A Pearl wall, at about 18.6 in, is close to the length of an 18.5 in rack, so measure shorter racks before you rely on them.

If your group plays with all 160 tiles of a set, each wall is 20 stacks long. Multiply by 20 instead.

Check 2: the groove

Tiles stand in a groove or on a ledge along the front of the rack. It should be deep enough that tiles do not topple when someone bumps the table, and roomy enough for the tile's thickness. Large tiles are 0.71 in thick, so measure the groove if your racks were made for standard tiles.

Check 3: the hand

Your hand of 13 or 14 tiles stands side by side, and exposures go on top. Fourteen Classic tiles need about 12.2 in, and fourteen Large tiles need about 15.4 in. On a rack shorter than about 16 in, a full hand plus exposures gets cramped.

A two-minute measuring routine

  1. Measure your rack from end to end, along the side where the pusher works.
  2. Measure the depth and width of the groove where the tiles stand.
  3. Multiply the width of the tiles you are considering by 19, or by 20 if you play all 160 tiles.
  4. Compare. If the wall is longer than the rack, the end stacks will hang past the pusher.
  5. Still unsure? Send us your rack's measurements and we will check them against our tiles before you order.

Racks, tiles and the mat

Rack length also shapes the mat you need, because the four racks frame the playing area. Bigger tiles mean longer racks, and longer racks want a bigger mat. Most of our mahjong table mats come in four sizes: 21 in for travel or a small table, 26 in for a card table, 32 in for a standard mahjong table and 33.5 in for a large table.

Which size should you choose?

  • You already own standard racks. Classic is the easy match, and Mini fits as well. Measure first for Pearl if your racks are shorter than 19 in.
  • Your group wants bigger faces. Choose Large with racks made for large tiles, at least about 21 in long. Or choose Pearl, which is taller than Classic and fits shorter racks than Large.
  • A small table or a set for travel. Mini takes the least space on the table and in a bag.
  • A gift for a player whose racks you have not seen. Classic, the typical American size. Or ask about the racks first.

Questions about mahjong tile size

What is the standard size of an American mahjong tile?

About 30 mm tall, 21 to 22 mm wide and 13 to 14 mm thick. Our 30 mm Classic, at 30 x 22 x 14 mm, matches it.

Is tile size measured by height or width?

Many sellers name a size by height, so a 36 mm tile is 36 mm tall. For rack fit, the width matters most, so check all three measurements.

Will 36 mm Large tiles fit standard racks?

A wall of 19 Large tiles is about 20.9 in long, longer than an 18.5 in rack and longer than our own racks of about 20 in. Use racks made for large tiles.

Do Pearl tiles fit standard racks?

Pearl tiles are 0.98 in wide, so a wall is about 18.6 in. Measure racks shorter than 19 in first. At 0.43 in thick they are slimmer than Classic, so check the groove as well.

Can you mix tile sizes in one game?

No. Every tile should look the same face down, and a different size would give tiles away. Play each game with one set.

What if I am not sure which size fits?

Send us your rack's measurements and we will check before you order. Our FAQ lists every tile size too.
